To find out what your local council has to offer contact them directly.

How many nappies will I need?

The number of nappies you need will depend on how often you are going to wash the nappies. Normally nappies are washed every 3rd day.
We recommend:
24 nappies of one size (available in sizes extra small, small, medium and large)
Please note that all parents’ and babies’ needs are different and you may need more or less nappies or covers depending on your circumstances. It is important that you have enough nappies and covers so that you do not run out, as washing small quantities of nappies is not cost effective.

The Environment

Today’s consumers are more environmentally aware than ever before. As parents take more social responsibility in the world we live, Washed and Delivered will become a natural choice.
Disposable nappies are disposable for parents, but not for the environment! Around 8 million disposable nappies are thrown away every day in the UK. The Government is committed reducing the amount of household waste going to landfill, and have targets set by the European Union to reduce waste by 65% by 2020.

Washed and Delivered Limited is committed in continuing to produce environmentally-friendly products. Cotton nappies are one of the fastest growing areas of baby care, and during the past five years the number of parents using cotton nappies in the UK alone has increased from 2% to 15%.

THE BENEFITS

Financial Reasons.

Washable nappies save you money!
The cost of using disposable nappies over 2 and a half years is between £800 - £1200, compared to between £160 - £580 for 'real' nappies.
The added advantage of 'real' nappies is that you can make additional savings when using them on subsequent babies - just think what you could do with the savings!
You could even recoup some of the money you spent on them by selling them afterwards. You can save yourself further money by using washable wipes instead of disposable wet wipes / cotton wool.

Environmental reasons

Washable nappies are better for the environment!
8,000,000 nappies are thrown away every day in the UK! Most end up in landfill. Your baby will fill approximately 130 black bin bags full of nappies in their nappy years, and it is predicted that each of these nappies will take up to 500 years to decompose.
Disposable nappies are the largest single contributor to Britain's landfill.
Paediatricians suggest newborns should be changed 10-12 times a day and older babies about six times, ending with just one being used at night-time.
Assuming an average of six changes a day over the nappy wearing career of your baby, you will use about 5,500 nappies. 5,500 nappies for one baby. Can you imagine how big a pile that is? Now try and imagine 1 million because that’s what we, as a nation throw away almost Every day!
One million little packages a day buried or burnt.
No-one knows how long disposables take to decompose in landfill and estimates vary wildly, but reported figures are between 40 and 500 years. If the baby Queen Elizabeth I had worn a modern disposable, parts of it could be around today, especially if King Henry VIII had adhered to modern advice and had sealed it in a plastic bag, effectively mummifying the contents!

Disposable?

Many people ask us about the environmental impact of using washable nappies. There are of course energy costs involved with manufacturing, washing and if you choose, tumble drying. There are these costs for every garment you buy. Would you wear disposable paper pants or would you prefer to wash cotton reusable pants?  If you decide to use washable nappies for your baby, at the end of  its nappy career, you have choices to make about what you would like to do with your nappies. You can do what we did, and put another baby into them. You can sell them or give them away as there is a very big market for pre-loved nappies, or you can arrange for them to go to the many charitable organisations that take used washable nappies for distribution in poorer countries. Your final choice would be to simply put your 40 nappies and 20 wraps into landfill.  Now compare this to 5,500 disposables. On an environmental issue, it’s a no brainer!
The disposable nappy problem is now so urgent that many councils are offering cash incentives to encourage parents to use washables nappies. Check out what your local councils are doing.

Better for Baby!

'Real' nappies don't contain any chemical gels - surely that must be better!
Washable nappies are especially comfy, and your baby will love the smell and feel of them.

Which Nappy?

It can be difficult to choose the right nappy for you and your baby - here's some advice to get you started.

There are a few factors to consider when choosing the right nappy for your baby:

Each type of real nappy has different pros and cons. Many people find that having a few different types of nappy works well so that they can choose which nappy best suits the situation at the time. You may want to consider hiring a trial bucket to help you decide.
There are basically four groups of 'Real' nappies available:

Flat Nappies

This system comprises a folded terry or pre-fold nappy with a liner placed on top, which is then inserted into a waterproof wrap. This is the cheapest method of using washable nappies and can cost as little as £160 for a good quality set.

Shaped Nappies

These are nappies that are shaped to fit and fasten neatly around baby, prior to putting on a separate wrap. Because they are sized according to different weights, they are generally neater and slimmer fitting than one size nappies.

Pocket Nappies

This is basically a wrap with a built-in fleece liner. These two layers form a pocket into which you add an absorbent pad (micro-insert). The nappy is adjusted by poppers at the waist and thigh to obtain a neat fit.

All-In-One Nappies

Exactly as it says a nappy and wrap fastened together to provide you with the ultimate in convenience. These nappies are great for those babies attending nursery or being cared for by grandparents as they are as simple to use as a disposable.
